    Sir Chris Bonington tells the extraordinary and very personal story of a life time journey of discovery, pushing the limits from his discovery of climbing at the age of sixteen through to repeating his epic first ascent of the Old Man Hoy to celebrate reaching the age of 80.

    In between are thrilling accounts of his first British ascent of the North Wall of the Eiger, Annapurna South Face, Everest South West Face, his epic first ascent of the Ogre with Doug Scott, one of the great survival stories of all time, and in more recent years sailing with Robin Knox-Johnston to climb an unclimbed peak.

    At the same time he introduces some of the great characters of the last sixty years – Hamish MacInnes, Tom Patey, Don Whillans, Dougal Haston, Doug Scott, Peter Boardman, Joe Tasker and many others.

    There are insights into the challenges of making a living around climbing and bringing up a family.

    Sir Christian John Storey “Chris” Bonington CVO, CBE, DL, is one of Britain’s most famous mountaineers.…. his career has included nineteen expeditions to the Himalayas, including four to Mt. Everest, and he led (among others) the expedition that made the First Ascent of the South Face of Annapurna in 1970. He is still active in the mountains, climbing with the same enthusiasm as he had at the beginning.

    In 1985 he achieved a lifetime ambition reaching the summit of Everest. He knows the Sherpas very well, and has huge admiration for this hardy and generous mountain people.

    “Sir” Chris is also patron and current (or former) president of numerous UK Charitable organizations, focused on the Himalayans – notably The Himalayan Trust (UK), founded by Sir Edmund (“Ed”) Hillary – he became patron, following Lord Hunt (who was the leader of the 1953 Everest Expedition).

    Chris assumed the presidency of the Himalayan Trust after Ed Hillary’s death.
