Piper Kerman? I don’t even know him!
That’s the perplexed response of a Nigerian senator and alleged drug lord said to be at the heart of the case that inspired the Netflix hit “Orange Is The New Black” — the women’s prison show, famously written, directed, produced by and starring women, based on the real life experiences of Kerman, who is, er … a woman.
But Sen. Buruji Kashamu can perhaps be forgiven for not being up to date with the latest developments in American pop culture: He’s been a fugitive from U.S. justice for the better part of two decades. And he has never spoken with the U.S. media about his fight to stay out of a Chicago courtroom — until now.
“No I haven’t seen it,” Kashamu told Chicago Inc. in an email interview from Lagos this week when asked about “Orange Is The New Black.”
“I do not have time to see films or movies. There are more pressing and productive things for me to spend my time on. I do not know Piper Kerman and do not have any opinion of him.”

Buruji Kashamu was born on 19 May 1958 and died of COVID-19 complications on 8 August 2020. He was a Nigerian politician who served as a Senator representing Ogun East in the 8th National Assembly.
Ogun East covers eleven local government areas: Ijebu North East, Ijebu North, Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu East, Ikenne, Ipokia, Odogbolu, Obafemi Owode, Remo North, Sagamu, and Ogun Waterside. Senator Kashamu was the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on States and Local Government.
He was a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State. He was appointed as the chairman, Organization and Mobilization Committee of the PDP in the South West zone of Nigeria.
In 2018, he was expelled from the People’s Democratic Party, a decision later voided by an Abuja High Court in October 2018. He was the 2019 Ogun State gubernatorial election candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party. He died of COVID-19 on 8 August 2020.
