David Jack Peverett (16 April – 7 February ), also known as Lonesome Dave, was an English singer and guitarist, best known as the original lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the rock band Foghat, which he co-founded following his tenure in Savoy Brown.[2][1]
Early years
[edit]Peverett was an avid fan of the blues and of blues-based rock and roll, and mastered these forms while performing. In the formative pre-Beatles early s, he was the vocalist and lead guitarist of The Nocturnes, which included his brother John Peverett (later to be Rod Stewart's road manager before becoming a Baptist pastor in the United States) on drums, Keith Sutton on rhythm guitar, and Brixton neighbour Al "Boots" Collins (later to be editor of tourist magazines in the West Indies and Middle East) on tenor sax. The Nocturnes achieved London popularity as a pub and club band and provided backing for other performers at a recording studio in Soho. After a brief tour with Swiss blues band Les Questions (during which time he was billed as Lonesome Dave Jaxx), Dave joined Savoy Brown as a rhythm guitarist, eventually taking over as lead singer. Lonesome Dave Peverett, lead singer and founding member of Foghat, died Monday, February 7, after a year-long battle with cancer. He passed away in an Orlando, Florida hospital from double-pneumonia, at the age of
Dave was born April 16, , in Dulwich, England and raised in south London. After a tenure with Savoy Brown in the early seventies, he and fellow members Tony Stevens and Roger Earl left to form Foghat, with Rod Price added on lead guitar. Foghat was a radio staple in the 70s and 80s, producing such hits as Fool For The City, Slow Ride and I Just Wanna Make Love To You, but was best known for their energetic live shows. The album Foghat Live, which peaked at No. 11 on The Billboard , went double-platinum.
Dave was first diagnosed with cancer in after a tumor was found in his kidney and was removed. He had since undergone extensive chemotheraphy treatments, touring briefly with Foghat in support of their most recent release, 's Road Cases.
Dave was survived by his wife Linda (who passed away December 2, ), his son Jason, daughters Lucy and Leila, and one grandchild. A private service was held on Thursday, February 10, for immediate family only with band members as pall bearers (at Dave’s request).
