URBAN ZULU
In , just four years after South Africa shed its political pariah status, the patriarchal foundations of the hybridised musical genre known as maskanda were emphatically upended. A product of the migrant labour system, maskanda, in its sound and often in its content, reflected the commodification of black labour and urbanisation through an exclusively male prism. A singularly gifted Inanda-born singer named Victoria Busisiswe Mhlongo forcefully shifted the status quo with her late-career opus, Urbanzulu; the title being a reference to her fluid and urbane artistic personae.
Gifted with a keenly emotive vocal range, there was an authority to her craft befitting someone who had honed it over decades much of those years spent in artistic exile in Portugal, Canada, the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom. Mhlongo’s exile life kept her on the move, singing in night clubs, cabaret, theatre, and performing with the likes of Afro-funk band Osibisa and recording as lead singer with Julian Bahula’s Jabula. As the “world music” genre gained European traction in the 80s, Mhlongo’s popularity grew. Based then in the Netherlands, she performed with the likes of Salif Keita, Manu Dibango and Brice Wassy, among others.

It was friends such as the late guitarist Sandile Shange who encouraged him to take guitar playing much more seriously.
At the age of eight, in the year , Kunene and some members of his extended family were trucked off by the Apartheid government to go live in the then relatively new township of KwaMashu.
“People can’t imagine what it’s like when you see bulldozers demolish your home in the middle of the night,” recalls Kunene. “The worst thing was that when they moved us, they came at night and packed my family into the back of a truck and then went to another area to pick up another family there and so on. So you were not just separated from your home, you were stripped of your friends and neighbours in the process. It was a very calculated act,” Kunene adds.
In very little time he had become the hottest guitar player and was discovered by the late Sakhile leader Sipho Gumede. M
